IV Solar gain MCS accreditation!

After several weeks of hard work an planning, IV Solar have been assessed today and informed that their application for MCS accreditation for the supply of Solar PV installations will be recommended for approval! So we will be able to display the MCS accreditation badge on our website, and more importantly carry out Solar PV installations on domestic properties.

The process of gaining Solar PV accreditation with MCS is a quite complicated and tricky one and is enough to challenge even the most organised organisations!
Becoming accredited with MCS requires several things including:
  • A complex and detailed quality management system
  • REAL (Renewable Energy Assurance) Membership
  • A complete Solar PV installation
  • Evidence of complete processes and how they are followed
  • A reasonable understanding of building regulations
  • Excellent knowledge of Solar PV systems, products and installation process
Any one of these things is achievable but to complete all the processes within a very limited timescale has been quite a challenge and has certainly put my organisation, administration and project management skills to the test.

From a personal perspective probably the most difficult aspects of passing the assessment were insuring the quality of the installation was completed to a high standard and finished in time for the inspection.
Several problems arose whilst carrying out the installation such as caravan blocking the access to the property, a 3ft trench needing to be dug through chalk ground, hitting and bursting an oil pipe whilst digging the trench, and 3 very large conifers which needed to be removed to eliminate shading on the south-west facing roof.
Other very challenging aspects to this installation included needing to find a scaffolding company to erect a scaffold at 18 hours notice (very difficult in this area), finding a tree surgeon at very short notice, and getting the roofer to remove his tools from the property roof on the morning of the installation!

To be continued...

MCS accreditation

MCS accreditation is an easy accreditation to get - How hard can it be to fill in a few forms and put up a solar panel? Well this week I have just discovered exactly how hard it can be! - Which I must admit has been a lot more difficult than I expected or anticipated.

There are still many hiccups which could happen along the way and events which may mean that the IV Solar application for MCS accreditation is rejected.. However the learning curve involved with setting up a complex solar installation and project managing it from start to finish has been very steep.

On top of the installation required we have had to put in place a whole QMS and make sure that all of our policies and procedures are in place and meet correct standards.

From figures I have read, I understand that over 3200 companies have passed the MCS accreditation in the past year, and over 300 companies are applying to be accredited every month - A figure which is also rising every month. The Solar PV installation business is booming in the UK and it's exciting to be a part of it. I wonder if i was not so involved in the development of the industry if i would notice stories in the news relating to renewable energy every day but the seem to appear everywhere compared to a few years ago I harely had an understanding of what renewable energy was!

I will update this blog post once the panels are up and the assessment has taken place to comment on the process and hopefully to confirm that IV Solar are an MCS accredited Solar PV installer!
